フォトグラファーイン玉島2015報告書より
「―見える」、展覧会で発表した作品を見返しながらそのことを考えています。
写真のほとんどが玉島の日常風景を切り取っているにもかかわらず、見た人の多くが「全く違って見える」と驚きを口にしていました。写真家によって切り取られた町は、いつもと同じであるはずなのに、額縁の中で別の時代や場所のようです。
「見える」ということは、自分が何かを見ることが出来ると同時に、自分も何かに見られるということだと思います。被写体となった人や町は、写真で自身の姿を見るのと同時に、そのように見られたことを意識しはじめています。
光の当たる場所が少し違うだけで、思わぬところに影を落とすように、今まで出会わなかった人と人、地域と人が出会い、これまでと違ったシルエットが町に刻まれた６週間でした。

[Excerpt from the “Photographer in Tamashima 2015” Report]
As I revisit the works presented in the exhibition “—Visible,” I find myself reflecting on their meaning.
Though most of the photographs depict everyday scenes from Tamashima, many viewers were struck by how unfamiliar they appeared—exclaiming, “It feels entirely transformed.” The town, captured through the photographer’s lens, should be unchanged. Yet within the frame, it evokes another time, another place.
To “see” is not only to observe—it is also to be seen. The people and places portrayed begin to recognize not just their own image, but the gaze that shaped it.
Much like how a subtle shift in light can cast unexpected shadows, new encounters emerged—between strangers, between the community and its residents. Over six weeks, unfamiliar silhouettes were etched into the town’s landscape.
I extend my deepest gratitude to Okayama Prefecture, all collaborators, the dedicated staff, and above all, the local community for their generous support throughout my residency.
